Meet Canan, Tandem's freelance story gatherer and online editor.

I like stories: telling them, listening to them, finding them and making them available for a wider public to read. I believe in the power of the arts and culture to build a better world – how ambitious right!, but that’s why I love Tandem so much and that I am proud of being part of this team. There are so many exciting stories in the Tandem Family and I am looking forward to capturing as many of them as possible.

Let me tell you a bit about what I do daily: I am a freelance writer, literary translator, editor and curator based in Amsterdam. I work internationally in English, French, Turkish, Dutch and Spanish. I find it very important that people can express themselves in a language they are comfortable with, and that’s why I will always try to accommodate Tandem participants’ needs when they share their story.

I’ve been working in the arts and cultural sectors for more than a decade. I translate and present contemporary Turkish literature in French and English, as well as comics (one of my favourite artistic medium!). My interest is in challenging official narratives and advocating freedom of expression through a wide range of creative projects and activities. And that’s why Tandem is so important to me. The idea of “Culture without Borders” can be a challenge but it is also a beautiful dream which we all make true by working together throughout all the Tandem programmes.

So I’m looking forward to receiving your stories! (You can submit via this online form we’ve prepared for you)
