Pau now presents two initiatives: North Africa Cultural Mobility Map and Platform HARAKAT, both offering invaluable resources mapping data, funding and residency opportunities, and more. Photo via Platform Harakat North Africa Cultural Mobility Map NACMM – North Africa Cultural Mobility Map is a research and info-platform about residency and mobility initiatives for artists, writers and researchers interested in travelling and developing projects from within North Africa. The aims of the NACMM are to promote alternative knowledge of the socio-cultural contexts of the region strengthening artistic and research collaborations between North African countries. In a moment of widespread miscommunication, we believe that it is urgent to bridge the gap between different cultures and the best way to do so is through knowledge sharing and mutual understanding. In order to achieve these goals the project has developed: A cartography of 70 artist-in-residency programmes operating in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Palestine. 45 video interviews with artists, curators, researchers and coordinators of artist-in-residency programmes in North Africa and the Levant. These interviews shape an archive of the different infrastructures that conform the contemporary art scenes of North Africa and the Levant focusing primarily on initiatives that foster artistic exchanges. Information about funding opportunities with more than 20 organisations listed. In the context of the Arab World, funding becomes a problematic issue as in most of the cases national grants for arts and culture are almost inexistent. Besides a panorama that might seem discouraging sometimes organisations and individuals are not aware of the diversity of resources available. The NACMM funding section aims at giving the tools to deep into all the opportunities currently existing. A database of resources with 90 entries including online magazines that hone in different topics relating to North Africa, a variety of info-platforms focusing on research done in Art, Humanities and Social Sciences in the Arab world and different regional and international cultural networks. NACMM is a project developed by CeRCCa (Barcelona), JISER (Barcelona and Tunis), Le18 (Marrakech), Atelier de l’Observatoire (Casablanca) and is funded by Anna Lindh Foundation and South Med CV. Photo via Platform Harakat Platform HARAKAT Named after the word “movements” in Arabic, Platform HARAKAT embodies the inherent contradictions of travelling: movements occur despite and because of a paradox simultaneously promoting, impeding, and forcing mobility. From a situated and cross-disciplinary perspective, Platform HARAKAT proposes to retrace the past and contemporary mobility of knowledge(s), bodies and practices focusing on the Mediterranean, the Sahel, and West Africa regions. The purpose of Platform HARAKAT is to reflect upon different approximations to the journey, the heritage of its traditions and its erasures. We want to set in motion concepts and practices derived from mobility and its shadows, to document forgotten histories and invisible stories and to stress the important connections that shape these territories, while providing a space for critical reflection and action. In order to do so, Platform HARAKAT constitutes itself through an online portal gathering a selection of resources branched into four different categories: Knowledges, Tools, Cartographies and Actions. KNOWLEDGES works as an interdisciplinary constellation of resources reflecting upon Platform HARAKAT ethos. It includes Interviews, Texts and Interventions conforming a selection of research, curatorial and artistic projects from the region and about the region concerning our key themes: nomadism, migration and travelling. The aim of KNOWLEDGES is to portray a variety of sources from where to rethink given for granted modes of knowledge production and dissemination. TOOLS functions as a repertoire of resources focusing on different modes of knowledge gathering. TOOLS includes Networks and Platforms, Archives and different Info-sites focusing on memory, activism, experimentation and tradition in the Arab world and beyond. Functioning as experimental CARTOGRAPHIES, this section conforms Platform HARAKAT’s curatorial project space. Making use of the different resources gathered in KNOWLEDGES and TOOLS, Platform HARAKAT team develops several conceptual mappings as a starting point to put in dialogue a constellation of present and past visual, textual, and sound pieces. These conceptual mappings, which will reflect upon specific topics, will become the seed for Platform HARAKAT thematic curatorial journeys. And finally, in order to put theory into practice ACTIONS documents the different projects in which Platform HARAKAT is involved in collaboration with other organisations and individuals. From critically reactivating cultural heritage to co-creating nomadic residences and reviewing alternative ways to rethink and interact with the public space, Platform HARAKAT team engages, at different levels and through different formats, in projects that enhance the meaningful mobility of knowledges and practices. Till now, Platform HARAKAT ACTIONS are The art of getting lost, NACMM – North Africa Cultural Mobility Map, Transformer and Beyond Qalifa Thania. Platform HARAKAT is a project developed in the framework of NACMM_North Africa Cultural Mobility Map and KIBRIT by the coordinator of CeRCCa Pau Cata, Ro Caminal, Marta Vallejo and Francesca Masoero. The platform is supported by SouthMed CV, Anna Lindh Foundation and the Departament de Cultura de la Generalitat de Catalunya.
