Athens by Dragos Lumpan See Athens through a New Lens Tandem Turkey alumni Dragos Lumpan joined the MitOst Festival in Athens this autumn. Through his photography, Dragos offers us a unique perspective of this vibrant city, creating a link between the Athenian neighbourhood of Metaxourghio and the Matache area of Bucharest. Athens by Dragos Lumpan I think the area of Metaxourghio was a good choice for hosting the MitOst festival. Walking through Metaxourghio one can feel its former glory, then its fall and now the rebirth of one neighbourhood through different forms of art. Athens by Dragos Lumpan Especially, street art. Athens by Dragos Lumpan There is a mix of modern large buildings and old abandoned buildings. Athens by Dragos Lumpan Some of them have been restored and converted into spaces for performance or restaurants. Athens by Dragos Lumpan Because of its abandoned spaces, Metaxourghio reminded me of the Matache area in Bucharest. Athens by Dragos Lumpan During the Festival I had the chance to present “Matache”, a film in which I documented the destruction of the Matache area and how authorities did not do their jobs to protect the community and the patrimony buildings.
