Performative Journey Comes to Berlin

A year ago to involve local residents on the Via Eurasia cultural route together with participants from different professions – archaeologists, historians, cultural route managers, tourism guides, artists – by interpreting its history, heritage, culture, and contemporary life through site-specific performances, we dreamed up the project of the “Performative Journey” together with several members of the Tandem family.

From July to October 2021, we realized field visits, workshops followed by performance events in Turkey, Albania, and Greece. Towards the end of this 1-year pilot project, we would like to have a final event in Berlin, where we would share our journey with a showcase, including examples of performative actions, soundscape installations, a short documentary film, as well as share the handbook prepared on the methodology, witness some live performative actions and chat around them.

This pilot project showed us that the Cultural Routes of Europe are not just the infrastructure for a journey through a landscape, but also the means to access layers of history and culture. The project enabled access, not in a static, lifeless way with signboards and maps, but in an interactive and creative way that peeled back the layers of the landscape to reveal the bare bones of the heritage beneath. We hope that more cultural route managers will team with art practitioners and local people to diversify cultural expressions and look at the heritage of their routes through creative art events.
