Dust and Gold

Tandem Shaml participants Ieva Raudsepa (International Summer School of Photography, Riga) and Sarah Bahgat (Townhouse Gallery, Cairo) have worked on Alternative Storytelling during their collaboration. As part of this partnership, artist Vika Eksta has joined in a residency with Townhouse Gallery in Cairo in September and October 2016.

Vika Eksta is a visual artist, performer and educator based in Latvia. She works with portraiture, self-portrait, performance, video editing and archival research. During her residency in Cairo, Eksta made a video piece entitled Dust and Gold, which you can watch below.

This piece speaks about past and contemporary ways of archiving, including conversations with people engaged in the practice. This was Eksta’s first personal encounter with Egypt – a country with a rich and complex past and present history.
